Weighted: (5.0 × 4 + 3.5 × 3 + 3.7 × 3 + 2.0 × 2) ÷ 12 = 45.6 ÷ 12 = 3.80. Unweighted: (4.0 × 4 + 3.0 × 3 + 3.7 × 3 + 2.0 × 2) ÷ 12 = 40.1 ÷ 12 = 3.34.
Which GPA to quote
Use the one the form or school asks for. Applications often ask for the unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale, even when your transcript shows a weighted figure. When in doubt, give both and label them.
Common mistakes
- Counting credits as courses. A 4-credit lab course and a 1-credit seminar carry different weight. Enter real credit values.
- Adding a bonus to a failing grade. Bonus points only apply to passing grades, so an F in an AP course is still 0.0.
- Mixing plus/minus scales. This calculator uses A− = 3.7 and B+ = 3.3. If your school uses a different scale, expect small differences.
How this is calculated
Weighted GPA = Σ (grade points × credits) / Σ credits.
Grade points use the US 4.0 scale: A/A+ = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, and so on. Rows without a grade are skipped.
Honors and AP/IB courses add a bonus to the grade points before weighting: +0.5 for honors, +1.0 for AP/IB. The bonus applies only to passing grades, so an F stays 0.0. The unweighted GPA ignores the bonus.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA uses the plain 4.0 scale. Weighted GPA adds bonus points for harder courses such as honors (+0.5) and AP or IB (+1.0), so it can exceed 4.0. Both are weighted by credits.
Does my school use the same bonus points?
Not necessarily. Many US high schools use +0.5 for honors and +1.0 for AP or IB, but each school sets its own scale. Check your school's published policy, and note that colleges often recalculate GPA on their own scale.
How is GPA calculated with different credit values?
Multiply each course's grade points by its credits, add those up, and divide by the total credits. A 4-credit A counts for more than a 2-credit A.
